Lady Luck – A Mischievous Oil Painting by Susan Verekar

Glamour masks deception in this original oil painting, Lady Luck, created by Knoxville fine artist Susan Verekar for the 2025–26 season of the Knoxville Opera, themed “Masters of Mischief.”

At first glance, our mysterious subject appears to hold a royal flush — a lucky hand, a knowing smirk, a crimson dress worthy of center stage. But look closer. Reflected in her martini glass is the truth: her cards are worthless. The illusion, like all great mischief, is exquisitely staged.

Boldly painted with cinematic contrast and evocative brushwork, Lady Luck plays with perception, inviting the viewer to question what’s hidden behind the mask (or the cocktail). The opera names stitched across her blindfold hint at the season’s dramatic tales of deception, seduction, and surprise — and the daring women who orchestrate them.

A true conversation piece, Lady Luck is a tribute to the drama, danger, and elegance of operatic mischief.
